20 Indian TV Series Inspired or Adapted from English TV Serials

It is a fact that when we are using something that has already been declared hit to create something “NEW”; the risk will be a bit lesser. Actually to come up with something new is a tedious task for many and that is why they opt for getting inspired from something that has already been declared as the favorite of the people. We know that many of the Indian artists have a tendency of “getting inspired” from foreign stuffs and that just brings us to some of the creations that we have already witnessed in some other language from some other country.

The phenomenon of adaptation or copying the concept of something in Hollywood is not new in India and movies have been remade since a long time from foreign languages to Indian languages. And we are also familiar from the fact that even sometimes some of our musicians copy music from English songs and songs from other languages. But little did we know that this inspiration/adaptation has not left the TV industry too and there are TV serials also running that are either a direct adaptation or inspiration from serials in English language. So here we bring to you Indian TV series that are inspired/adapted from English TV series:

20 Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao

This was actually one of the mistake that the Indian creators have done that they as well as the viewers regret spending their time on. This series was the Indian version of I’m a Celebrity….Get Me Out of Here! ; which was a British reality game show. There has been only 1 season of this show (even that was unbearable) and that season was hosted by Mini Mathur and Yudhishthir Urs. There were 15 celebrities in the show and the show ran for 54 days. Ultimately Mona Wasu became the winner of this show. Some of the popular celebrities who participated in the show were Mika Singh, Jay Bhanushali, Akkashdheep Saigal, Shweta Tiwari, Aman Verma etc.

19 The Suite Life of Karan and Kabir

This is the series that spoiled our memories of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody; the original American show from which it was adapted. The show premiered on 8th of April in 2012 and somehow the series managed to get good reviews from critics and good response from public. But one thing you cannot do and that is replacing Ashley Tisdale as she is till date one of the most beautiful actresses to work in a Disney series. The show ran for 2 seasons and was finished in 2014.

18 Jeanie aur Juju

There is no doubt that Ali Asgar is a class A actor and the same has been proved by his work in CNWK and many other Indian serials. But you might be able to use him in a better way for an original series rather than working for an adaptation of an American sitcom. The series was adapted from I dream of Jeannie, and Ali plays the role of Aviator who finds a 2000 year old Genie who brings twists and turns in his life. This show premiered on 5th of November in 2012 and ended on 6th of June in 2014. The original series actually completed its 5 seasons while the adapted one could not even survive for 2 years.

17 Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi

So this is yet another type of your never ending soap opera that was started on 24th June of 2014 and is still running on Colors channel. The show is however said to be inspired from famous novel and 2009 British series of the name Wuthering Heights but has failed to recreate the magic of the original series.

16 The Bachelorette India

Mallika Sherawat surely depended on a lot of other things to keep her in limelight other than acting. This Indian adaptation of American series The Bachelorette America was an attempt wasted. The show was presented by Rohit Roy and consisted of 15 episodes. The first episode was aired on 23rd October of 2013 while the last episode aired on 8th November of 2013.

15 Badi Door Se Aaye hai

It hurts when actors like Sumit Wadhwa and Production like Hats off Productions get together to give a show that is below average. This show is about an alien family that lands on earth and due to some reason tries to mix up in the environment of earth just like the show from which it is copied (sorry inspired); 3rd Rock from the Sun.

14 Reporters

The much hyped series Reporters is actually inspired from US series of the name The Newsroom. The original series show complete 3 seasons while the inspired one has already met with an end in the same year in which it was started which is really bad for an Indian TV series. Reporter was aired from 13th of April to 19th of October of 2015 showing a total of 132 episodes.

13 Yudh

This is the TV miniseries from which the wish of director Anurag Kashyap to direct Amitabh Bachchan was fulfilled. Amitabh and Anurag both know what they are doing and this is the reason that this series which was aired from 14th of July in 2014 to 14th of August in 2014 was well received both by viewers and critics. But this whole series reeks of the inspiration from Breaking Bad which is one of the most popular and most brilliant TV series that has ever been made in US. But as far as the inspiration is in the right hands we will not complain.

12 Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi

The only profit that this series could get was that it was released at a time when internet was not accessible so easily so there was very much awareness about its adaptation. This TV series from which Mona Singh became a household name is adapted from Ugly Betty. Jassi… ran for a 548 episodes and was one of the best serials at that time.

11 Sumit Sambhal Lega

This is the latest in the list which is the official adaptation of Everybody Loves Raymond. The show is about a man named Sumit and the troubles he face in his everyday life when he has to choose between his wife and mother whenever they argue. The show starred all good actors and was actually a worthy adaptation but as they say that all good things come to an end; this show too witnessed its end a few weeks earlier. However there are rumors that the creators might be thinking of bringing the show back which would be a good thing as the show was actually a great adaptation in itself with talented actors especially the character played by Satish Kaushik was just awesome.

10 Kyaa Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hai

You would not dream of a TV series sinking to the bottom which is the adaptation of an already hit reality show and at the top has SRK as the host. So this show aired on 25th of April of 2008 and ended with its last episode airing on 27th of July in the same year airing only 37 episodes of a game show that was hosted by one of the most popular actors in India. The show was inspired from the popular American game show Are You Smarter than A 5th Grader? , the main highlight of the show was when in the last episode Lalu Prasad Yadav appeared as the special guest.

09 Dil Mil Gaye

This Star Plus show was actually a sequel of Sanjeevani and was starring actors Karan Singh Grover and Shilpa Anand in the lead roles. Other important roles were played by Karan Wahi, Drashti Dhami, Mohnish Behl, Jennifer Winget and some others. The show was on air from 2007 to 2010 with 2 seasons running. This show like its prequel was clearly inspired from the American Drama series Grey’s Anatomy which was one of the most popular drama series in America and is currently in its 12th season.

08 Indian Idol

We all loved Abhijeet Sawant who was the winner of 1st season of Indian Idol and witnessed an overwhelming response and love from people all over the country. This was the first of its kind show in India and got a tremendous and splendid response from the audiences. Show’s format and even the symbol were clearly adapted from American Idol. While American idol started airing from year 2002; 1st season of Indian Idol was launched in 2004-2005. Indian version has completed 6 seasons so far while the American version is currently in its 15th season. Indian Idol has witnessed many talented and famous judges so far which includes the names of Sonu Nigam, Kailash Kher, Asha Bhosle, Sunidhi Chauhan, Alisha Chinai, Salim Merchant, Vishal Dadlani etc.

07 Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa

Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa is a dance reality show and is based on the concept of celebrities performing in front of judges and audiences. The show is inspired from BBC’s Strictly Comes Dancing and also Dancing with the Stars. Jhalak was started in 2006 and so far has completed 8 seasons. This celebrity dance show however has gained a lot of popularity and was made popularity with the elements of dancing, star judges, star participants and the spicy plots for the show written in between.

06 Fear Factor

This Indian stunt/dare reality game show was aired for the first time in 2008 where it was hosted by Akshay Kumar. The show is based on the American show Fear factor while in India it is also popular with its tagline Khatro Ke Khiladi. The show has gained equal popularity amongst the adventure loving and adventure fearing people. So far show has completed 6 seasons while the 7th season is running with Arjun Kapoor as host.

05 Twenty Four 24

24 is an Indian TV drama starring Anil Kapoor in the lead role and is an Indian adaptation of American series of the same name (24). While the American series has seen 9 seasons; only one season of the Indian series has released so far. But sigh of relief for Indian viewers and fans is that Indian version was appraised quite well by both fans and critics. The Indian version has been so popular that even its second season is said to be released this year.

04 India’s Got Talent

The very first episode of this show’s first season was aired on 27th of June in 2009. This show which is the cooperative effort between Colors and Britain’s FremantleMedia is an Indian version of Britain’s Got Talent Franchise. The show goes on with the Global Got Talent format where a participant has to perform in front of studio audiences and 3 judges. There have been 6 seasons of the Indian version seen so far and every time; the show has received good reactions from the viewers.

03 Bigg Boss

Bigg Boss is one of the most criticized shows in India and is the show that is responsible for the arrival of Sunny Leone in Indian Film and TV industry. This may be regarded as one of the most popular TV series in India and has so far completed 9 seasons. Various hosts including Shilpa Shetty, Arshad Warsi, Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt have hosted the show with Salman hosting the most recent and also most number of seasons so far. The show is an Indian adaptation of Big Brother which was first developed by Endemol in Netherlands.

02 Kaun Banega Crorepati

We must be thankful for this show as it is the show that marked the comeback of the star of the millennium in a splendid and superb way. KBC is based on the UK game show Who wants to be a Millionaire? ; and the show has been so popular in India that people have said to change their timetables and even their lifestyles in order to catch up with the show. While show has also seen SRK as the host; there is no doubt that people love and prefer to see Amitabh as their host. Amitabh’s legendary presentation, his aura and charisma is what made this game show so popular.

01 Comedy Nights with Kapil

Now this is undisputedly the most popular show in India. Almost each and every big celebrity from Bollywood and all the famous people from different sectors have appeared on the show. The show however is an adaptation of Kumars at No. 42 which is a British TV show. The family that is shown in CNWK looks clearly inspired from Kumars at No. 42. But as long as you are providing the great show which is making people laugh forgetting their stress in life; this inspiration can be overlooked.

So these were some of the famous TV shows that were inspired from the TV series of some other countries. Some of these serials have been so well that they have gained high popularity in India too while some are there who were totally found to be sinking to the bottom.
